The aim of the course is to describe the present extreme right-wing and left-wing political scene, to illustrate its origins and briefly describe its development from the French Revolution to the present. Special attention will be paid to the form of the far-right and the left in the Czech Republic.
The student will gain the following expertise:
- learn to identify the basic attributes of each ideology
- gain a basic overview of key concepts and theories of racism, anti-Semitism, and nationalism
- can distinguish between Nazism and Fascism, respectively Neo-fascism and neo-Nazism
- get an overview of the most important subcultures associated with the far right and the far left
- learn to identify the symbolism of the major far-right and left-wing groups
- knows the development of the extreme right and left the situation in the Czech environment
The final exam consists of:
1) Term paper
- You choose the topic of the term paper yourself to match the content of the course (far-right/left political parties, groups, ideologies, events atc.). If you are unsure, you can consult the topic by e-mail (charvatj@centrum.cz)
- The term paper must have at least 8 standard pages (approx 2000 words)
- The term paper must have a bibliography and must contain citations
- the bibliography must contain at least 3 relevant sources. Any scientific paper (book, article) is considered a relevant source. Additional sources are allowed provided that at least three relevant sources are met. Encyclopedias, including electronic ones, are not allowed.

2) written test
The test will take place either online (in case of persistent measures against COVID-9) or in person. The online test will take place on the Moodle platform.
The written test is evaluated on the scale:
- 91% or more => A
- 81 - 90% => B
- 71-80% => C
- 61-70% => D
- 51 - 60% => E
- 0-50% => F
